Studebaker Movie!
Great Studebaker Racing Movie
From
Team Studebaker Member Bob Palma: Thanks a million Bob!
A great
movie with real Studes in real competition is "Pioneers of Stock Car
Racing: 1951-1959 Grand National Stock Car Races" from Rare Sportsfilms
video. I bought this tape maybe 10 years ago, but it is still available. It is a
series of period racing movies from the earliest days of NASCAR through the
first year (1959) at the new Daytona International Speedway.
Great footage, all black & white period stuff, of course, of the races at
Daytona Beach; half on the beach sand and the returns along U.S. 1, I think it
is. When you see these cars get beat around the rutted dirt/sand corners of the
race "course," you have a real appreciation for their sturdiness.
In one of the 1951 races, a 1951 Commander 4-door (yes, FOUR door) broadsides
over the top of the embankment in one of the corners. The guy actually recovers
the car, even though the RR wheel has gone over the top of the embankment, and
makes it back onto the race course only moments before the car would have rolled
over. No Studes visible in the various races after 1952, sadly.
Much additional footage is shown of NASCAR Stock races at the famous
Pennsylvania Langhorn Speedway. When you see those 1951-1954 Hudson Hornets take
the corners, you understand why they won. The Olds 88s and early Chrysler Hemis
might have out-accelerated the Hudsons in the straight-aways, but they flopped,
bounced, and generally wallowed around all over themselves in the corners while
the Hornets rolled on by, comparatively on rails, while the drivers, such as
wild Herb Thomas, probably didn't even take their foot off the gas! Great flick!
